Project Management at OP2

Ever wondered how Project Management differs in a complex project? We asked Rocky Lee, one of our Project Management consultants about what it’s like to be a Project Manager with OP2.

What does your role as an OP2 Project Manager involve?

My role as an OP2 project manager involves playing an active role in assisting our client to ensure on time delivery of vital project milestones and resolve project challenges. Very often OP2 project managers will form part of the client’s project team to directly drive results for our client.

What are some of the key lessons you have learnt from being a project manager at OP2?

A key element of success that I have learnt is understanding the importance of building a positive relationship with the project team. While it is important to be able to efficiently follow well established project management processes, success is also achieved with a positive team attitude. The ability to react quickly to problems, sit down and work things out professionally is what can make or break a project.

How does project management at OP2 differ from traditional practices?

We make a strong emphasis on the method the project team communicates and how information is presented across the team. We identify key regular governance between key stakeholders to ensure the roadmap for the project is established as early as possible. One of our techniques is to set up an effective Visual Management workspace to help integrate and coordinate different functions.

What are some of the key techniques you use to ensure a project is managed smoothly?

A key technique is to have the scope, contractual requirements and timeline flushed out in as much detail as possible at the early stage of the project. Having proper engagement with the client project team to understand the risk profile when setting targets during the early planning stage. The more risks and assumptions are recorded and aligned across functions, the less surprise there will be later on down the track.

How do Op2’s project management techniques benefit a project?

The benefit of having a dedicated project workspace to easily let the team visualise information across the project, is simply huge! Visual Management, when set up correctly, really helps put together the aligned bigger picture of things. This allows the team to work closer and more effectively because they have a better understanding of the short- and long-term drivers from team members from other functions.
